Falmouth Memorial Library in the Memorial Day Parade

Staff members of the Falmouth Memorial Library participated in the Falmouth Memorial Day Parade on May 26, and well they should! The Library is a memorial to all veterans and had its origins in the Falmouth Salvage Committee of World War II. Community members collected metal, rubber, rope, etc. to be recycled for war time use. Just as the Friends of the Library now raise money from sorting bottles, the Salvage Committee received money for what they collected, too. That money went to create the Falmouth Memorial Library. We spotlighted recycling then and now in the parade. Rosie the Riveter (Matilda) joined us with our recycling carts.

Spring is coming! (We hope)

April is almost here and the Falmouth Library is planning a number of programs to celebrate. April 4 @ 7 pm we will be hearing the Green Team Report about the Falmouth family that won a complete energy makeover for their house. On April 8, poet Ken Nye will be here at noon for LunchBox Friends to read from his latest poetry book "From the Heart" and our spring Book Sale will take place April 12 from 9:30 am to 5 pm with a sneak preview on Friday from 4 - 6 pm ($5 donation requested). Give us a call if you can help set up on April 10 (781-2351). April 22 @ 2 we will be showing the film "The Story of Stuff" and discussing its implications to our life styles. I hope you can join us for any or all of these programs.

What's Happening in March?

What's happening in March at the Falmouth Memorial Library? One of our many programs and events starts Monday, March 3rd, the second annual Beauty and the Books. This is a silent auction that was great fun. Come by on Monday and check out all the great arts and crafts donated by local artists. I've got my eye on a certain pink sweater....what will you find? And the best part, all proceeds benefit the Falmouth Memorial Library. Thank you to all the contributors as well as our hardworking volunteers who put together a great event.

Leap Day

Happy “Leap Day”! Did you ever wonder the reasoning behind leap years? Check out the Marvel Databases http://libraries.maine.edu/mainedatabases/ and click on the link for Britannica Online Public Library Edition and type in Leap Year in the search box. You’ll be presented with articles from Britannica’s online edition of their encyclopedia. You can find out that a leap year is a year containing one extra day in February, like today, February 29th. But wait, there’s more! The articles provide links to explain terms more fully, like year or Gregorian calendar. Check it out!
